Species (Bifoliates and Unifoliates)
Culture and Notes: Bifoliate Cattleyas
These species are from Central and South America and are some of the most rewarding of all orchids. Bifoliates often flower in “heads” of many long-lasting flowers. From an evolutionary standpoint, these are generally very “old,” as species go, and have distintive character. As a general rule, do not repot bifoliate species unless there is active new root growth, but be sure to repot as soon as you do see active new roots just barely edging out of the new growth. After repotting, water just barely enough to keep the plant from shriveling significantly and grow in low light with good air circulation and high humidity. Some bifoliates do best when mounted (on cork, tree fern, etc., as noted in the descriptions below). For those grown in pots, use a relatively shallow, broad pot like a bulb pan, and use a mix that will not break down quickly…all of which will help you avoid repotting any more frequently than necessary. These species have great “personality” and many have powerful, fun fragrances. |

Bifoliate species currently available:
| C. aclandiae ‘Pauwela’ x self |
This Brazilian species has a terrific, strong fragrance and is a parent of many of the finest spotted hybrids. Chrome-yellow base color with big, bold chocolate polka-dots and a fuchsia lip with white highlights on the side lobes. Best grown mounted with good air movement, allowed to dry somewhat between waterings. Water sparingly when not in active growth, but do not allow the bulbs to shrivel.
Summer, 2” pots, nice plants two years to flowering-size, $35
| C. aclandiae var. coerulea ‘Blue Skies’ x self |
There are only a few good clones of the “blue” form of this species. This is a mericlone of one with good shape and an unusual, lilac color in the lip instead of the usual deep purple tones.
Summer, 2” pots, three years to flowering-size, $50
| C. bicolor ‘Mendenhall-Beta’ (4n) x self |
All of these seedlings appear to have successfully retained the valuable, increased ploidy of the parent plant. The original ‘Beta’ is the finest green-breeding C. bicolor (yes, better than ‘Green Magic’), so you can imagine the excitement generated by these seedlings. Strong green color with just a little pale bronze feathering on the petal edges in some plants, all with contrasting brilliant purple lips. There could easily be award winners in this batch. Something truly dramatic to flower for those long, hot days of summer. This species is an essential centerpiece on the Summer show circuit! Brazilian.
Summer, 4” pots, two years to flowering-size, $40
| C. bowringiana var. rosea ‘Pink Elf’ x self |
|
Earlier selfings of the rosea form yielded many different pastel shades, including some white forms. You have to see these to believe the vigor in this seedling population. Rampant growers, to give tall heads of opalescent flowers for the Fall shows.
Fall, 2.5” pots, large plants ready for 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $35
| C. intermedia var. orlata |
Fully mature plants of a selected strain with light sepals and petals and a bold, dark fuchsia-purple lip. The shape on many of these is truly outstanding. In the wild, this species occasionally withstands light frosts.
Spring, Mounted, flowering-size, $35

This color form has clear green sepals and petals and a stark, solid white lip. An excellent Brazilian parent species and still very rare. Strong, well-established plants.
Summer, 4” pots, two years to flowering-size, $40
| C. loddigesii ‘Aranda’, AM/AOS x self |
Selfings of a very fine form with extra-flat sepals and petals and rich, glowing lilac color. The lip is also nicely tailored without a lot of the twisting and recurling seen in the more run-of-the-mill forms of the species.
Spring, 2” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30
Select parents to produce large, flat flowers with glowing, hot-purple color. Venezuela and beyond into the Amazonas.
Late Spring and Summer, 4” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30

We have nice, strong young mericlone plants of this famous clone. One of the most popular cultivars, and for many good reasons. Large, flat and dark flowers, and an excellent parent plant.
Late Spring and Summer, 2 ¼” pots, $30
Culture and Notes: Unifoliate Cattleyas and other Cattleya-Alliance Species
For many people, the unifoliate cattleyas are the orchids that first gained their interest and inspired their imagination about far away jungles. These are the showy and elegant species that supported the corsage industry for decades and they often feature strong, wonderful fragrances. In general, they take high light (but not direct sunlight after 10:00 a.m. in the morning) and benefit from a distinct wet-dry cycle in their watering regimen. Remember the tried-and-true wisdom of experienced growers who teach that, “…if in doubt about whether it is dry enough to water today, wait one more day, then water.” When you do water, do it like you mean it. Do not just barely get the roots wet: instead, think monsoon. When it is time to water, you should water, water, and water some more. A good thorough drenching will help eliminate built-up salts and other deposits deep down in the dark recesses of the bottom of the pot. In nature, these plants often grow on limbs exposed to 24-hour/day constant air circulation. In general, the faster you can repeat the wet/dry cycle, the better for your plants, so grow in potting mixes that allow for good drainage, and give your plants excellent air circulation. As to fertilizer, a little fertilizer goes a long way. Providing a little balanced fertilizer on a weekly basis is far better than gorging your plants on heavy fertilizer doses once a month. |
Unifoliate species currently available:
| B. digbyana ‘Arcadian Alba’, HCC/AOS x self |
Good, clear green versions of this Central American species are still rare. This species is famous for its truly bizarre, fringe-on-fringe lip and a tantalizing fragrance.
Winter-Spring, various. 2” pots, three years to flowering-size, $30
This species is less frequently offered for sale than other Brassavolas. These plants have outstanding vigor and are near flowering-size already in 2 ½” pots. Sepals and petals are green-to-chartreuse, with heart-shaped, crisp white lips. Many flowers per inflorescence and a tendency to break multiple leads even on young plants.
Various seasons, 2 ½” pots, one-two years from flowering, $30
| B. nodosa ‘Mendenhall’, AM/AOS (87 pts.) |
 |
Mericlones of one of the largest of this species on record, with tall, strong spikes of flowers and a nice flat lip. Fragrant at night and a terrific parent plant. An ideal subject for specimen plant culture. Keep some of the thick, corky roots exposed to air movement for best culture (mount in a basket, for example, or use good drainage crock in the bottom of a clay pot). This Central American species can take very high light.
Spring-various, 2.5” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30
| C. dowiana var. aurea ‘Pauwela’ x self |
Great chrome yellow petals and crimson lip, with a peerless, distinctive, classy fragrance like nothing else. This Colombian form is a regal Cattleya species. When not in growth, provide a clear rest period with lower temperature, higher light and decreased water. Wait for the new growth to lengthen a good one inch or more before gradually returning to a regular watering regimen. Our plants are growing very well.
Summer-Fall, 3.5” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30
This is a carefully selected strain bred by Marv Ragan, who has seen more than his fair share of dowiana come and go over the years. When first-bloom seedlings from this strain started flowering out, serious collectors scooped them up quickly. See the description above for cultural notes for mature plants. These seedlings are wonderfully vigorous and well-established. Near flowering-size plants of high quality dowiana are not a regular offering in catalogues, so get these while you can.
Summer-Fall, 3.5” pots, one-to-two years to flowering-size, limit one per order please, $40
(‘#3’ x ‘#2’)
This is a strain of the richly colored form of dowiana that is often quite hard to find. Sepals and petals are heavily overlaid with purple tones, giving the flower a warm, glowing effect.
Summer-Fall, large plants in 2” pots, $30
| C. gaskelliana var. alba ‘White Heritage’, AM/AOS x self |
This is a selfing of a clone that was produced by generations of selected breeding. Previous selfings of this clone produced excellent, new white cultivars, including at least one AOS award winner. These plants are ready to be shifted into 5” pots.
Late Spring, early Summer, 3.5” pots, one-two years to flowering-size, $40
| C. gaskelliana var. coerulea |
(‘Choroni’ x ‘Mimi’)
This Venezuelan species is so fine that it will demand your life-long loyalty. Almost rudely healthy, vigorous growths throw spikes of large, shapely flowers of classic “orchid corsage flower” shape and a dizzying, wonderful fragrance. This is the “blue” strain from proven parents. ‘Mimi’ is a little smaller than some, but she always produces very high quality in her offspring. The first to flower from this cross was bloomed by a customer of ours this year and it had wonderful color. Very easy to flower.
Spring, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $100
| C. gaskelliana var. tipo ‘Linc’s Dark’ x self |
 |
See the description for var. coerulea above. In this version, we have a darker than normal purple color with all the same usual, exquisite traits of the species.
Winter-Spring, 4” pots, two years to flowering-size, $40
| C. jenmanii var. coerulea ‘Blue Skies’ x self |
One of the rarest of all the “blues,” there have been very, very few of these ever found in the wild in its native Venezuela. Perhaps the loveliest fragrance of the genus? This is a selfing of a form with excellent, clear color.
Spring, 2” pots, two years to flowering-size, $50
| C. labiata |
 |
(‘Just Right’ x ‘Bon Dia’, BM/JOGA)

Fall-Early Winter, 2 ½” pots, three years to flowering, $30
(‘Peyron’ x Flagstadt’)
Sibling crosses of amesiana clones can produce a range of colors, including some very rare, new pastel tones. Most of these are flowering true to the form with light white sepals and petals and a pastel-pink lip. Brazilian.
Fall, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $50
(‘Cuyagua’ x ‘Ocean Road’)
One of the easiest “blue” cattleyas to grow and flower, these seedlings have great vigor and will give us some fine new exhibition forms of the species with good, strong color.
Fall, 2.5” pots, two-three years to flowering-size, $25
(‘Gran Sabana’ x ‘Canaima’)
This floriferous lavender Venezuelan species remains seldom seen even in the collections of well-known Cattleya specialists. These are good growers and already flowering size.
Spring, 4” pots, flowering-size, $40
(‘Macaray’ x ‘Canaima’s Ruby’)
This sibling cross of a famous Venezuelan species combines two reliable clones for full shape and warm, rich color. One of the easiest orchids to flower, with a lovely fragrance. Exceptional vigor, with plants already breaking multiple leads in 4” pots!
Spring, 5” pots, large, flowering-size plants, $50
(‘Eduardo’ x ‘Macaray’)
This sibling cross of selected clones is producing more show-quality cultivars with good, even lavender-purple color and clear lines in the lip.

Selfings of a reliable, very shapely cultivar with strong stems and good, clear purple colors.
Spring, 4” pots, flowering-size, $50
| C. lueddemanniana var. tipo |
(var. coerulea ‘Mariauxi’ x var. tipo ‘Calex’)
These are coming out with the typical lavender color, but with improved, rounded shape from the incredibly talented ‘Mariauxi’ parent.
Spring, 4” pots, flowering-size, $100
| C. lueddemanniana var. tipo |
An excellent population of the species, with round and dark parents on both sides here.
Spring, 4” pots, flowering-size, $50
| C. lueddemanniana var. tipo |
 |
Fully mature, previously flowered plants of high average quality, most in the color range of good, rich lavender-purples…but a few have flowered in wonderful pastel shades, nearly var. concolor in tones.
Spring, 6” pots, flowering-size, $35
| C. lueddemanniana var. tipo ‘Arthur Chadwick’, AM/AOS |
Mericlones of an earlier award, with well-rounded petals and light color. A famous clone for the collector.
Spring, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $50
One of the most popular yellow species, loaded with real charm and bright, clear yellow color. This dwarf plant can be maintained in a 4” pot indefinitely, but prefers to be grown mounted or in a shallow basket. We have seedlings ready to be moved onto the mount or basket.
Various, 2” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30
(‘#52’ x ‘Suwada’)
This sib cross is giving good lavender forms with strong, vigorous growth.
Late Spring, 2” pots, large plants ready for 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $30
| C. maxima var. alba ‘Mendenhall’ x self |
The parent plant in this particular strain has incredibly strong, erect spikes that need no staking, with crystal-clear, brilliant white flowers and contrasting, strong yellow patterns in the lip. These will flower with just a few blooms while quite young, but wait until they are well-established in 8” pots before grading them, when they will then have massive heads of flowers. Orchids this fine are very, very rare and catalogue stocks of them vanish quickly (you’ve been told, good friend!). Limit of one per order.
Late Spring, 2.5” pots, two years to flowering-size, $50
| C. maxima var. tipo ‘Hercules’ |
Mericlones of a large, well-displayed lavender form, great for shows.
Late Spring, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $50

Spring, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $50
| C. mossiae var. semi-alba |
 |
(‘Canaima’s Liebling’ x ‘Canaima’s Niki’) CO-NZ-003
C. mossiae is the national flower of Venezuela. We have many selected forms of the species in a wide range of colors. Here, we have combined two parents with brilliant, hot-white color and contrasting dark purple lip patterns. Some of these could be very large and excellent plants for show and exhibition.
Spring, 5” pots, flowering-size, $50
| C. mossiae var. semi-alba |
(‘Canaima’s Niki’ x ‘Blanca’)
The pod parent is very large with bright color contrast and ‘Blanca’ is an outstanding, world-famous parent.
Spring, 5” pots, flowering-size, $50

| C. percivaliana var. tipo |
(‘Summit’ FCC/AOS, x ‘Sonia’)
An excellent sibling cross between two famous cultivars, one lavender and one nearly semi-alba clone. These are flowering as fine examples of the lavender form. For many years, this species has been a reliable producer of flowers for the Christmas season. Venezuelan.
Christmas, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $40

Fully mature plants from our large collection of Venezuelan species, with good color and nice, strong plant habits. Light lavender, with much darker lips.
Christmas, 6” pots, flowering-size, $35
| C. percivaliana var. tipo ‘Canaima’s Queen’, FCC/SVCN |
More ruffled edges to the petals than normal, with more substance, better shape, richer purple color…thoroughly deserving of the highest award given in its homeland of Venezuela, and given by judges who have seen uncountable thousands of this species. Mericlones of our original plant. Limit one per order.
Christmas, 4” pots, one year to flowering-size, $50
Another hard-to-find species, with a famous pattern of bold purple stripes over a broad white base color on the lip. The petals are sometimes quite strongly spotted in purple as well, making for a wonderfully busy “show” of patterns and colors. Brazilian.
Late spring, various; 2” pots, three years to flowering, $25
This is a sib cross of one of the most elegant species. Noted for its beautiful, “egg-yolk” color in the lip, flowers are rosey-lavendar to near-white with lovely crimping in the lip ruffles and great, over-all character. Easily one of the prettiest Cattleya species. Very vigorous, easy to grow and flower. From Colombia.
Winter-various, 4” pots, two years to flowering-size, $35
| C. trianaei var. concolor |
(‘Canaima’s Colombianita’ x ‘Oto’) We will see wonderful new concolor forms of this Colombian species in this sibling cross, with palest pinkish lavender color spread evenly over the flower. Some may be pastel lavender shades and there may even be a surprise or two approaching the white tones. Gorgeous, in whatever color they choose to be! For many years, this species was a mainstay of winter cut flower production in the USA.
Winter, 2.5” pots, three years to flowering-size, $35
Fully mature plants of this Colombian gem. Rich, sparkling jewel tones in the lavender shades on large flowers with good, wide petals and a lovely fragrance.
Winter, 6” pots, flowering-size, $35
| C. walkeriana ‘Estrada de Colina’ x C. walkeriana |
Various seasons, 2”+ pots, two years to flowering, $30
We have mature plants available mounted on tree-fern. These plants are very well-rooted and strong growers. Most of these have previously flowered, but the over-all quality has been outstanding on these (we regularly use these same plants in our show exhibits).
Various seasons, mounted on tree fern, flowering-size, $40
| C. walkeriana var. semi-alba x sib |
There will be a range of unusual, pastel shades to flower in this group, including a few var. semi-alba clones possible. These are large plants reaching out of their pots, ready to be mounted on tree-fern, baskets or larger pots.
Various seasons, 2”+ pots, two years to flowering, $30
| C. walkeriana var. tipo x ‘Puanani’ |
(A nice, select-quality sib cross of the lavender form with good shape. We have good, strong plants.
Various seasons, 2”+ pots, two years to flowering, $30
| C. warneri var. rosea ‘Erico’ x self |
These are selfings of a very rare color form of this famous Brazilian species. Light, nearly pink-white petals and a darker pink lip. Some of these may revert to a beautiful shade of lavender, but the best will be outstanding examples of the pink-toned form. Very rarely seen and a true collector’s item.
Winter-late Spring, 2.5” pots, three years to flowering-size, $30
An all-time favorite here, with tall spikes of showy yellow flowers brushed with broad edges of deep, deep mahogany color. The lip is yellow with fancy purple etching. One of the most prized fragrances, many growers say it reminds them of “Bazooka Bubble Gum.” Very easy to grow and flower and stays in bloom for a long time.
Late Spring, 2” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30
A miniature species with star-shaped flowers in tones of deep chocolate to yellow, set close to the foliage. This is quite rare, and has interesting potential as a parent for new, very different dwarf plants.
2.5” pots, flowering-size, $30
| Enc. tampensis var. alba ‘Mendenhall’, AM/AOS |
There are not many var. alba clones of this Florida native species and it is rare to see any offered for sale. This clone is a little bit smaller than normal, but the green color in this case persists until the flowers drop off (which is unusual since many “albas” of this species take on a somewhat custard-yellow tone as the flower ages). This particular clone is also a proven, great parent of many, many crosses. Mericlones from the original, awarded plant.
Spring, 2” net pots, mature plants with multiple leads, flowering-size, $35
(A native Florida jewel with a delicious fragrance in the evening that many people say is reminiscent of nutmeg. Some clones of this species tend to self-pollinate their flowers (cliestogamous), so keep a watch on your plant and remove the seed pods if they develop (assuming you want to preserve the plant’s energy for next year’s blooms). Star-shaped yellow-orange flowers at the end of a tapered lead growth.
Spring-various, 2.5” pots, flowering-size, $30
| Epi. parkinsonianum ‘Walton’s Favorite’ x self |
Another rare offering, these selfings are from an excellent cultivar. Growth is semi-pendant, drooping and very elegant. White and yellow flowers hang out just beyond the foliage in gently arching displays. Should be grown mounted and allowed to dry thoroughly between waterings.
Winter-Spring, 2.5” pots, three years to flowering-size, $30
| Epi. roseoscriptum ‘Mendenhall’ x self |
Rarely seen, tall plants (to 3-feet and more) with long panicles of flowers arching out well away from the plant like a shower of tiny, falling stars. Incredibly intriguing as a parent plant and very under-used to this point. Basically green sepals and petals with a yellow-white lip having tiny, purple highlights.
Winter, 2.5” pots, two years to flowering-size, $30
(‘Belize’ x ‘#1’)
A select strain of this floriferous species from Central America, with clear, distinct color instead of the sometimes bland tones seen in lesser forms of the species. Color patterns here are crisp and well-defined in this strain. Long, branching spikes of yellow base colors with strawberry-purple spots in abundance.
Spring, 2.5” pots, two years to flowering-size, $25
| L. anceps ‘Mendenhall’, AM/AOS (4n) x self |
Graceful lavender flowers with beautifully painted darker lines in the lip. The ‘Mendenhall’ clone is a chance tetraploid mutation of the well-known clone, ‘Irwin’s’, AM/AOS, which was itself once exhibited with a show of 6” lavender flowers on spikes up to 6 feet long (a 12-foot spread when spikes go in opposite directions!). The ‘Mendenhall’ clone has incredibly heavy substance, full, rounded shape and a little more tidy display with 4-5-foot spikes. Some extraordinary clones have already flowered among these seedlings. This is a long-time favorite, Mexican species.
Fall, 2.5” pots, (ready for 4”), one year to flowering-size, $45
We are very pleased to offer mericlones of this gorgeous, pastel lavender form of the species. Give these quite high light when fully mature. Tall spikes, large, showy, sparkling, ruffled flowers and an elegant, pristine fragrance. Just perfect. Limit one per order.
Late Spring-Summer, 2.5” pots, three years to flowering-size, $40
(var. rubra x var. rubra)
This Brazilian species is one of the most generous Cattleya alliance show plants, with oh, so many flowers on an erect, easy to grow plant. This strain promises bold, cherry-crimson flowers with lighter highlights and contrasting lip throats with gorgeous, white-yellow areas under the column sporting thin, elegant purple pinstripes. Bold and elegant in the same flower!
Late Spring, early Summer, 4” pots, flowering-size, $40
(var. rubra x var. venosa ‘Canaima’s Stars’)
Tall spikes of large red-purple flowers, some with a “starburst” pattern of colors that will be very showy for those late spring/early summer shows. Your orchid friends probably have nothing like this, so if you want something different and high-quality, get two of these.
Late Spring, early Summer, 4” pots, flowering-size, $40
(var. flamea x var. venosa)
We will certainly see some festive, new color patterns here for purpurata, either in stripes or splashes…or some of both in the same flower! Rare and choice; very few plants are available.
Late Spring, early Summer, 4” pots, flowering-size, $40
(var. flamea x var. rubra)
Everyone wants to own their own, unique cultivar of this glamorous Brazilian species. Sibling crosses that involve different color forms can produce entirely new color patterns. We have a number of these crosses designed to give you the opportunity to discover a new color pattern and to give your “discovery” your own clonal name. This particular cross will range from deep carmine flowers to striped patterns of dark purple-red, all with a contrasting light color under the column and large flowers. Great fragrance and mounds and mounds of flowers.
Late Spring, early Summer, 4” pots, flowering-size, $40
| L. purpurata var. schusteriana |
 |
To many people, this is one of the most dramatic color forms of L. purpurata. Clear, bright white sepals and petals are accented by a deep indigo-purple lip. Vigorous growers, these break multiple leads freely even at a young age, which produces great specimen plants with multiple heads of flowers on mature plants that are virtually covered in fragrant blooms.
Late Spring to early Summer, 4” pots, two years to flowering-size, $40;
2 ½” pots, three years to flowering, $30
| L. tenebrosa var. vinicolor |
(‘Valley Isle’ x ‘Rainforest’, FCC/AOS)
This is a “thoroughbred” strain involving huge, very flat, deep copper colored petals against a striking crimson lip. An awesome sibling cross of one of the most showy species. ‘Rainforest’ caused quite a lot of excitement when first awarded and it is still an exemplary form of the species.
Summer, 2” pots, two years to flowering-size, $40
We have mature plants ready for sale of this long-time favorite. This strain has nice, relatively flat flowers and warm orange color.
Spring, 2” pots, flowering-size, $30
